Is Online Slot Gambling Legal in Your State?

By | 18 December 2023

While online gambling continues to gain traction in the United States, the vast majority of states still prohibit it. That’s why it’s important to know what laws apply in your jurisdiction before you place a wager on any of the many online casinos available. To help, we sifted through each state’s legal landscape to determine whether or not it has an online casino. Here’s what we found.

Online gambling is illegal in Alaska. While the state does have a few tribal casinos, they don’t offer any form of online casino play. In fact, this is one of the most conservative states in the country when it comes to casino-related activities. Despite this, the state has made progress in trying to change its gambling laws. However, it will be a while before residents of the state can enjoy an online casino.

New York is the only state that currently offers a legal online casino to its residents. However, players should be aware that these sites are often unregulated and may not adhere to strict standards of fairness and security. In addition, they often have high withdrawal limits and don’t offer any kind of customer support.

The state of Nevada is a notable exception. While the Silver State was among the first to introduce sports betting, it has yet to launch online casino games. The reason behind this is unclear, but it could be due to the state’s protection of its land-based gambling monopoly.

In the meantime, residents can still gamble at the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos and use a Nevada-based mobile app to place wagers on their favorite sports. However, the lack of online casino options is a shame since this would have increased player engagement and revenue for the state.

Delaware was another state that was ahead of the curve in terms of legalizing iGaming. Gov. Jack Markell gave the green light to iGaming back in 2012. Unlike Connecticut, Delaware’s online offerings are limited and only include two online casinos that run off of the state lottery platform.

While Maryland passed legislation to legalize sports betting in 2020, the same cannot be said for online casino games. However, the state has a social casino option that offers free-play slots and table games to its residents.

Online casinos aren’t legal in Georgia, but that doesn’t mean the state isn’t considering the possibility of making them legal. The state’s legislature is kicking around various legislative efforts to make this happen, but no concrete moves have been made as of yet.

In contrast, Hawaii is one of the most restrictive states when it comes to gambling. While the state hasn’t introduced any legislation to make online gambling legal, it did allow for a DraftKings test case in 2021. Regardless, the state remains one of the most anti-gambling in the entire nation. Luckily, this may change in the future as more states see the financial benefits of legalizing online casino games. For now, however, the best option for residents is to visit a neighboring state.
